Treatment of vicarious traumatization includes many different facets, and there are some steps you can take once you recognize you need to cope. One such coping mechanism is self-care, where you engage in activities that are both relaxing and self-soothing. These can include, but are not limited to, exercise, meditation and rest. Another coping mechanism is to create an outlet for emotional discharge by doing activities such as writing, creating art, or using social support networks. Finally, engage in therapy to eradicate the impact that the trauma has on your family system; whether you need individual, couple, or family therapy, a skilled therapist can help treat the effects of vicarious traumatization.
