Pinpoint What Will Keep You Preoccupied
For many of us the holidays don't just signify gift giving and egg nog but it's the end of the year in terms of getting work done in many areas of our lives. If you know that there are things that will keep you preoccupied from fully being present during your holidays, try your best to tackle them now. Be proactive, but realistic. Know that there are things that can't and won't be done; and that's totally OK. Everything won't be finished when they need to be. Focus on relaxing and being refreshed so you can be on your A game once you get back to your tasks at hand.
Put Down Your Phone
Make it a point to disconnect from your phone when spending time with the ones you love. Our phones can be an amazing way to stay connected and conveniently wish holiday cheer but there needs to be boundaries around its use when in the presence of others. You can’t be fully present while scrolling on instagram and to create memories you need to be aware of what is happening in the moment. Set time periods where you will and won’t be on your phone. Another great tip is to put your phone on silent, leave it in the car or keep it in your coat pocket while you socialize. Focus on creating memories, not just posting them.
Prepare to be Social
Being around people that you haven’t seen in a while can be stressful, especially if you have to catch up with all of life’s happenings from the past year. If you feel overwhelmed at the thought of interacting with others, prepare yourself beforehand. Exercising or yoga can help relieve holiday stress as well as figuring out a way to respectfully decline conversations that you rather not go into concerning certain topics like dating, breakups or other stressful life events. Put your energy towards genuinely wanting to catch up with others or help out with wrapping or giving gifts. Involving yourself in simple tasks can help you be in conversation while also having something to focus conversation on besides yourself.
The holidays can be stressful but the focus should always be on bonding and creating positively memorable moments with family and friends. Do more than just give presents this year; give presence. Check out this video by lululemon about giving presence:
